Zhi Hou: A Citrus-Inspired Chinese Baijiu Packaging

Unveiling Xiongbo Deng's Award-Winning Design

Xiongbo Deng's inspiration for Zhi Hou stemmed from the product itself - a Chinese Baijiu brewed from citrus. The designer ingeniously shaped the bottle to resemble a citrus fruit, providing an immediate visual clue to the unique flavor of the Baijiu. The bottle's ball shape is enhanced by irregular bulges at the shoulder, breaking monotony and adding an element of intrigue.

The bottle cap, designed to simulate citrus branches, peeks out when the bottle is placed in an orange cloth bag, further enhancing the citrus illusion. This innovative design not only communicates the unique flavor of the Baijiu but also adds a touch of oriental aesthetics to the packaging.

The technical realization of Zhi Hou involved the use of an integrated mold for the glass bottle, a zinc alloy bottle cap, and a cloth bag wrap. Despite the challenge of using materials unrelated to plants, Deng successfully created a design that immediately brings to mind a citrus fruit. The product dimensions are 150mm x150mm x165mm.

The project, which began in April 2021 and concluded in August 2021, was carried out in ShenZhen. Deng's underlying research focused on the client's desire to quickly communicate to consumers that the wine is brewed from citrus. The resulting design not only achieves this but also maintains a high sense of value, making it unforgettable.

As a testament to its design excellence, Zhi Hou was awarded Silver in the A' Packaging Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
